One stick of butter, every way
| Unit | 1 US stick | 1 UK/EU block |
|---|---|---|
| Grams | 113.4 g | 250 g |
| Ounces | 4 oz | 8.8 oz |
| US cups | ½ cup | 1.10 cups |
| Tablespoons | 8 tbsp | 17.6 tbsp |
| Millilitres (melted) | 118.3 ml | 260.4 ml |
The US stick (113.4 g) is exactly half a US cup — so two sticks make a cup. The UK block (250 g) is a little more than two sticks (226.8 g). Melted-butter millilitres use butter's density of about 0.959 g/ml — 113.4 ÷ 0.959 ≈ 118.3 ml per stick.
Butter in cups (US cups, 227 g per cup)
| US cups | Grams | Sticks |
|---|---|---|
| ¼ cup | 56.7 g | ½ stick |
| ⅓ cup | 75.7 g | ⅔ stick |
| ½ cup | 113.5 g | 1 stick |
| ⅔ cup | 151.3 g | 1⅓ sticks |
| ¾ cup | 170.2 g | 1½ sticks |
| 1 cup | 227 g | 2 sticks |
Butter's grams-per-cup (227 g) sits near the top of the ingredient range — a cup of butter weighs nearly twice a cup of flour (~120 g). That's why converting "1 cup" to grams without knowing the ingredient is hopeless: the grams to cups converter needs the butter preset selected.
Butter in tablespoons
| Tablespoons | Grams | US cups |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tbsp | 14.2 g | ¹⁄₁₆ cup |
| 2 tbsp | 28.3 g | ⅛ cup |
| 4 tbsp | 56.7 g | ¼ cup |
| 8 tbsp (1 stick) | 113.4 g | ½ cup |
| 16 tbsp | 227 g | 1 cup |
Worked examples
Example: a recipe calls for 170 g of butter. That's 170 ÷ 227 ≈ 0.75 US cups — ¾ cup, or 1½ sticks. Cold butter is easier to cube into quarters of a stick (each 2 tbsp).
Example: a UK recipe asks for half a 250 g block. That's 125 g, which is 125 ÷ 227 ≈ 0.55 US cups — just over half a cup, or about 1.1 US sticks.
