Convert grams ⇄ tablespoons

A tablespoon of butter weighs about twice a tablespoon of flour — pick your ingredient.
Presets
8 tbsp
100 g = 8 tbsp (at 200 g per US cup)

Formula: 100 g ÷ 200 g/cup × 16 = 8 tbsp

Approximate weights: ingredient weights per cup vary with packing, grind and brand — the presets are typical spooned-and-levelled values. For baking, weigh with a scale when it matters.

How the grams to tablespoons conversion works

The converter applies tbsp = grams ÷ grams-per-cup × 16, because a US cup holds exactly 16 US tablespoons. Going the other way, grams = tbsp ÷ 16 × grams-per-cup.

Worked example: 50 g of butter is 50 ÷ 227 × 16 ≈ 3.52 tbsp. Two tablespoons of granulated sugar weigh 2 ÷ 16 × 200 = 25 g.

Like all spoon measures, these are typical values, not exact ones — a heaped tablespoon of flour can weigh twice a level one. For baking that has to be right, weigh with a scale. Need cups instead of spoonfuls? Use our grams to cups converter.

grams to tablespoons questions

How do I convert grams to tablespoons?
Divide grams by the ingredient's grams-per-cup, then multiply by 16: tbsp = g ÷ g-per-cup × 16. For example, 100 g of sugar (200 g per cup) is 100 ÷ 200 × 16 = 8 tbsp. Pick a preset above or type your own weight.
How many grams is a tablespoon of butter?
About 14.2 g (227 g per cup ÷ 16) — the figure printed on most butter wrappers.
How many grams is a tablespoon of flour?
About 7.5 g with the typical 120 g cup — but a scooped tablespoon can weigh noticeably more, so treat flour spoon measures as approximate.
How many grams is a tablespoon of sugar?
12.5 g (200 g per cup ÷ 16) — two tablespoons is exactly 25 g.
Can I convert tablespoons back to grams?
Yes — switch the direction above. Grams = tbsp ÷ 16 × grams-per-cup, so 4 tbsp of vegetable oil is 4 ÷ 16 × 217.7 ≈ 54.4 g.
