The short answer: about 2,000–2,500 steps
A mile is 5,280 feet. Divide by stride length and you get steps per mile: steps = 5,280 ÷ stride in feet. Most adults walk with a stride of 2.1–2.5 feet, which gives 2,112–2,514 steps per mile — hence the familiar 2,000-step rule of thumb.
Steps per mile by stride length
| Stride length | Steps per mile | Typical walker |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0 ft (61 cm) | 2,640 | Shorter adults, slower pace |
| 2.2 ft (67 cm) | 2,400 | Average adult, casual pace |
| 2.5 ft (76 cm) | 2,112 | Taller adults, brisk pace |
| 2.6 ft (79 cm) | 2,031 | Brisk walkers, long legs |
Running is different
Running strides are much longer — typically 3.5–4.5 feet — so a mile of running is only about 1,200–1,500 steps. That's why step counters undercount running distance if they assume a walking stride.
Worked example
Your tracker says 10,000 steps. At a 2.2 ft stride, that's 10,000 × 2.2 = 22,000 feet = 4.17 miles. Our steps to km converter does this with an adjustable stride length, and the miles to km converter converts the result to kilometres (4.17 miles ≈ 6.71 km).
