How the liters to gallons conversion works

A gallon is not a gallon everywhere. The US liquid gallon is 3.78541 litres; the imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. So: gallons = litres ÷ 3.78541 (US) or ÷ 4.54609 (UK). Reversed: litres = gallons × 3.78541 (US) or × 4.54609 (UK).

Worked example: 10 litres is 10 ÷ 3.78541 ≈ 2.64 US gallons, but only 10 ÷ 4.54609 ≈ 2.20 imperial gallons. Using the wrong gallon in a recipe or a fuel calculation throws the answer off by a fifth — always check which gallon your source means.
