watts to amps Converter

Convert watts to amps and back — amps = watts ÷ volts, with 230 V (UK/EU), 120 V (US) or 12 V selectable. Free, instant, no sign-up, full working shown.

Convert watts ⇄ amps

8.6957 amps
2000 watts = 8.6957 amps (at 230 V (DC, or AC with power factor 1))

Formula: 2000 W ÷ 230 V = 8.6957 amps

Assumption: this is a DC calculation, or AC with power factor 1. For AC motors and other inductive loads the real current is higher — divide by the power factor.

How the watts to amps conversion works

The converter applies amps = watts ÷ volts. Going the other way, watts = amps × volts. The voltage is the part people forget: the same 2000 W heater draws 8.7 A on UK 230 V mains but 16.7 A on US 120 V mains.

Worked example: a 2000 W kettle at 230 V is 2000 ÷ 230 = 8.696 A. On a 12 V car circuit, a 120 W device draws 120 ÷ 12 = 10 A — which is why low-voltage wiring needs thick cables.

This assumes DC, or AC with power factor 1 (heaters, kettles, incandescent bulbs). Motors and other inductive loads draw more current than watts ÷ volts suggests — divide by the power factor to allow for it. For more everyday tools, see the full list on the homepage.

watts to amps questions

How many amps is 2000 watts at 230V?
8.696 A — 2000 ÷ 230. The same 2000 W at 120 V is 16.667 A.
How do I convert watts to amps?
Divide by the voltage: amps = watts ÷ volts. So 1000 W at 230 V is 1000 ÷ 230 = 4.348 A.
How do I convert amps back to watts?
Multiply by the voltage: watts = amps × volts. So 13 A at 230 V is 13 × 230 = 2990 W — just under a UK socket's 13 A limit.
Does the voltage really matter?
Yes — it's the whole calculation. Halving the voltage doubles the current for the same power, which is why US 120 V circuits need lower-wattage appliances or thicker wiring than UK 230 V ones.
Why is my motor's current higher than watts ÷ volts?
AC motors have a power factor below 1, so real current = watts ÷ (volts × power factor). A 1000 W motor with power factor 0.8 at 230 V draws 1000 ÷ (230 × 0.8) = 5.435 A, not 4.348 A.
