Formula: 2500 g ÷ 1000 = 2.5 kg

How the grams to kg conversion works

The converter applies kg = g ÷ 1,000. The SI prefix "kilo" means ×1,000, so the gram-to-kilogram step is just moving the decimal point three places: 1,000 g = 1 kg, 2,500 g = 2.5 kg. Going the other way, g = kg × 1,000.

Worked example: a recipe calling for 750 g of flour is 750 ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 kg — three-quarters of a kilo. A 1 kg bag of sugar is 1,000 g, so a 500 g bag is half of it: 0.5 kg. For grams to volume, see our grams to ml converter.

Kitchen scales usually read in grams below a kilo and kilograms above, so this is the conversion you use most when scaling recipes up or down. For pounds instead of kilograms, see our kg to lbs converter.

grams to kg questions

How many grams are in a kilogram?
Exactly 1,000 g. The prefix "kilo" means a thousand in the SI system, so a kilogram is one thousand grams — the simplest conversion in the metric system.
