How the shoe size conversion works

The converter maps between the three major systems — US, UK and EU — using the standard published charts below, separately for men and women. Pick your gender, the system your size is in, and the size itself, and the other two systems appear instantly. The charts are labelled as standard charts deliberately: brands vary by up to half a size, so for an exact fit check the brand's own chart.

Worked example: a women's US 8 converts to UK 6 and EU 39.5 on the standard chart, while a men's US 9 converts to UK 8 and EU 42.5. Note the different US–UK gap: half a size for men, two sizes for women.

shoe size converter questions

What is a US size 9 in UK and EU (men's)?
A men's US 9 is UK 8 and EU 42.5 on the standard chart below. Pick men's + US + 9 above to check any size.
How do US and UK shoe sizes differ?
For men, the UK size is usually 0.5 smaller than the US size (US 9 = UK 8). For women the gap is bigger — about 2 sizes (US 8 = UK 6). EU sizes run on a different scale altogether, roughly 1.5 sizes per US step, so always convert with the chart rather than guessing.
Why do the same sizes fit differently between brands?
These are standard charts, and brands vary by up to half a size in length and width — Nike, Adidas and dress-shoe makers do not share one last. If you are between sizes, or buying a brand you have never worn, check that brand's own chart and your foot length in cm.
Do half sizes exist in all three systems?
US and UK sizes come in half steps (9, 9.5, 10), while EU sizes step in two-thirds of a centimetre — so EU 42, 42.5, 43 are the usual sequence, with the .5 marking a half step rather than a true half size.
How do I measure my foot for a shoe size?
Stand on paper, trace around your foot, and measure the longest distance heel to toe in cm. Compare it with the brand's cm column — foot length is the one measurement every system is ultimately built from, so it beats converting from another brand's size.
