Convert coffee grams ⇄ cups brewed

Grams of coffee mean nothing without the ratio — the same 30 g brews more cups at 1:17 than at 1:15.
Presets
2.0288 cups
30 g = 2.0288 cups (at 1:16 coffee-to-water)

Formula: 30 g × 16 ÷ 236.588 ml/cup = 2.0288 cups · water: 480 ml

Brewing ratios are starting points: grind size, bean and taste all shift the best ratio a little. Note that many coffee makers count a “cup” as 5–6 oz (about 150–177 ml), not a US cup (236.588 ml) — this page uses US cups.

How the coffee conversion works

The converter applies cups = grams × ratio ÷ 236.588, where a US cup is 236.588 ml and the ratio is parts water per part coffee by weight. At the standard 1:16 ratio, each gram of coffee brews 16 ml of water — so 30 g brews 480 ml, about 2 cups.

Worked example: a morning pot of 4 US cups at 1:16 needs 4 × 236.588 ÷ 16 ≈ 59.1 g of coffee and 946 ml of water. At a stronger 1:15, the same 4 cups need about 63.1 g.

Treat the ratios as starting points, not rules: grind size, bean and taste all shift the best ratio a little. Note also that many coffee makers count a “cup” as 5–6 oz (about 150–177 ml), not a US cup — if yours does, brew by weight instead.

coffee questions

How many grams of coffee per cup?
About 15 g per US cup (236.588 ml) at the standard 1:16 ratio — 236.588 ÷ 16 ≈ 14.8 g, rounded to 15 g. Strong brews use about 16 g per cup (1:15); mild brews about 14 g (1:17).
What is the 1:16 coffee ratio?
One part coffee to sixteen parts water by weight — the Specialty Coffee Association's golden ratio. 30 g of coffee to 480 g (ml) of water brews about 2 US cups.
How many cups does 30 g of coffee make?
About 2.03 US cups at 1:16 (30 × 16 = 480 ml; 480 ÷ 236.588 ≈ 2.03). At 1:15 it is about 1.90 cups; at 1:17 about 2.16 cups.
Does the brewing method change the ratio?
A little — French press and pour-over both sit near 1:15–1:17, while espresso uses a much tighter ratio (about 1:2) and is not what this page calculates. Use the presets above for filter-style brewing.
Can I convert cups brewed back to grams?
Yes — switch the direction above. Grams = cups × 236.588 ÷ ratio, so 4 cups at 1:16 needs 4 × 236.588 ÷ 16 ≈ 59.1 g.
