Convert salt grams ⇄ teaspoons

Grams ≠ teaspoons without the salt — a teaspoon of fine salt weighs twice a teaspoon of Diamond Crystal kosher.
Presets
1.6667 tsp
10 g = 1.6667 tsp (at 6 g per US teaspoon)

Formula: 10 g ÷ 6 g/tsp = 1.6667 tsp

Approximate weights: salt weights per teaspoon vary with crystal size and brand — the presets are typical level-teaspoon values. For seasoning, weigh with a scale when it matters.

How the salt conversion works

The converter applies teaspoons = grams ÷ grams-per-teaspoon. Crystal size decides the weight: fine table salt packs about 6 g into a US teaspoon, Morton kosher about 4.8 g, Diamond Crystal kosher about 3 g and coarse sea salt about 5 g — pick the preset that matches your salt, or a recipe's teaspoon count will be badly off.

Worked example: a recipe calling for 10 g of fine table salt needs 10 ÷ 6 ≈ 1.67 teaspoons. The same 10 g of Diamond Crystal kosher salt is 10 ÷ 3 ≈ 3.33 teaspoons — double the spoons for the same salt, because its hollow flakes pack so loosely.

Treat every preset as typical, not exact: crystal size varies by brand and batch, and a heaped teaspoon is not a level one. When seasoning has to be right, weigh with a scale — and always check which salt your recipe was written for.

salt questions

How many teaspoons is 10 g of salt?
About 1.67 teaspoons of fine table salt (10 ÷ 6). The same 10 g is about 2.08 teaspoons of Morton kosher salt and 3.33 teaspoons of Diamond Crystal kosher — crystal size decides.
Why do kosher and table salt differ per teaspoon?
Crystal size and shape. Fine table salt packs tightly at about 6 g per teaspoon; Morton kosher's compact flakes land around 4.8 g; Diamond Crystal's hollow pyramids land around 3 g. Same saltiness by weight, very different by spoon.
How do I convert salt grams to teaspoons?
Divide grams by the salt's weight per US teaspoon: teaspoons = grams ÷ grams-per-teaspoon. With the fine table salt preset selected above, type any weight to see it — or switch direction to go from teaspoons back to grams.
How many grams are in a teaspoon of salt?
Typical level-teaspoon values: fine table salt 6 g, Morton kosher 4.8 g, Diamond Crystal kosher 3 g and coarse sea salt about 5 g. Brand and crystal size shift these a little, so treat them as typical, not exact.
Can I convert teaspoons of salt back to grams?
Yes — switch the direction above. Grams = teaspoons × grams-per-teaspoon, so 2 teaspoons of fine table salt is 2 × 6 = 12 g.
