Convert powdered sugar grams ⇄ cups

Grams ≠ cups without the sifting — a sifted cup of powdered sugar weighs less than an unsifted one.
Presets
0.9091 cups
100 g = 0.9091 cups (at 110 g per US cup)

Formula: 100 g ÷ 110 g/cup = 0.9091 cups

Approximate weights: powdered sugar weights per cup vary with sifting, brand and how the cup is filled — the presets are typical values. For icings, weigh with a scale when it matters.

How the powdered sugar conversion works

The converter applies cups = grams ÷ grams-per-cup. A US cup is 236.588 ml, and powdered sugar's weight per cup depends on sifting: a sifted cup is about 110 g, while an unsifted spooned cup is about 120 g — the air sifting adds in makes the difference.

Worked example: a frosting recipe calling for 250 g of sifted powdered sugar needs 250 ÷ 110 ≈ 2.27 cups. The same 250 g unsifted is 250 ÷ 120 ≈ 2.08 cups.

Treat every preset as typical, not exact: grind, brand and how the cup is filled all shift the weight. When an icing has to be right, weigh with a scale — and check the packet, which sometimes prints its own cup weight.

powdered sugar questions

How many grams are in a cup of powdered sugar?
About 110 g sifted, or about 120 g unsifted and spooned. Recipes that say “1 cup sifted powdered sugar” mean sift first, then measure — the order matters.
How many cups is 100 g of powdered sugar?
About 0.91 cups sifted (100 ÷ 110), or about 0.83 cups unsifted (100 ÷ 120).
Should I sift powdered sugar before measuring?
If the recipe says sifted, yes — sifting breaks up lumps and aerates it, so a cup weighs less. For dusting or glazes the difference rarely matters; for icings, follow the recipe's wording exactly.
Is powdered sugar the same as icing sugar?
Yes — powdered sugar, confectioners' sugar and icing sugar are the same finely ground sugar, usually with a little cornstarch to stop clumping. The names differ by country, not by ingredient.
Can I convert cups of powdered sugar back to grams?
Yes — switch the direction above. Grams = cups × grams-per-cup, so 2 sifted cups of powdered sugar is 2 × 110 = 220 g.
