Both countries kept the pint after splitting from the same gallon family, but the US kept the older Queen Anne wine gallon (3.78541 litres) while the UK standardised the imperial gallon (4.54609 litres) in 1824. A pint is an eighth of a gallon in both systems, so the pints differ by the same 20%.
