BTU to kWh Converter
Convert BTU to kilowatt-hours and back — the energy-to-bill-unit conversion, distinct from the BTU/h power rating.
Convert BTU ⇄ kWh
Formula: 100000 BTU (BTU ÷ 3,412.14) = 29.3071 kWh
How the btu to kwh conversion works
The conversion is exact: kilowatt-hours = BTU ÷ 3,412.14. One kilowatt-hour is the energy of one kilowatt running for one hour, and one kilowatt is 3,412.14 BTU/h, so 1 kWh = 3,412.14 BTU. Going the other way, BTU = kWh × 3,412.14.
Energy, not power: this page converts an amount of energy (BTU) into another amount of energy (kWh) — the unit on electricity bills. It is different from BTU to kW, which converts a power rate (BTU/h) into kilowatts. Confusing the two is the most common BTU mistake: a 12,000 BTU/h air conditioner running for one hour uses 12,000 BTU of energy, which is 3.52 kWh.
Worked example: 100,000 BTU — one therm of gas — is 100,000 ÷ 3,412.14 = 29.31 kWh. And 10 kWh of electricity is 10 × 3,412.14 = 34,121 BTU. Gas-bill readers should also see therms to kWh.
Handy benchmarks: 1,000 BTU = 0.29 kWh, 10,000 BTU = 2.93 kWh, 34,121 BTU = 10 kWh and 100,000 BTU = 29.31 kWh.
