Nm to lb-ft Converter
Convert newton-metres to pound-feet and back — the torque conversion every car and bike workshop manual needs.
Convert N·m ⇄ lb-ft
Formula: 100 N·m (N·m × 0.73756) = 73.756 lb-ft
How the nm to lb-ft conversion works
The conversion is: pound-feet = newton-metres × 0.73756. One newton-metre is the torque of one newton applied at one metre, and in imperial units that works out to 0.73756 lb-ft. Going the other way, N·m = lb-ft ÷ 0.73756 (equivalently, multiply lb-ft by 1.35582).
Watch the spelling: torque is pound-feet (lb-ft), a force times a distance. Pound-feet is not foot-pounds of energy, though the two are numerically equal in this conversion. European and Japanese workshop manuals quote N·m; American manuals quote lb-ft — this converter bridges the two, and kgm to Nm covers the older kilogram-metre figures still found on some specs.
Worked example: a wheel-nut torque of 120 N·m is 120 × 0.73756 = 88.51 lb-ft. And a classic 200 lb-ft American V8 figure is 200 ÷ 0.73756 = 271.16 N·m.
Handy benchmarks: 50 N·m = 36.88 lb-ft, 100 N·m = 73.76 lb-ft, 200 N·m = 147.51 lb-ft and 500 N·m = 368.78 lb-ft.
