Therms to kWh Converter
Convert therms to kilowatt-hours and back — the gas-bill unit against the electricity-bill unit.
Convert therms ⇄ kWh
Formula: 10 therms (therms × 29.3071) = 293.0712 kWh
How the therms to kwh conversion works
The conversion is: kilowatt-hours = therms × 29.3071. One therm is defined as 100,000 BTU, and since 1 kWh = 3,412.14 BTU, one therm is 100,000 ÷ 3,412.14 = 29.3071 kWh. Going the other way, therms = kWh ÷ 29.3071.
The gas-bill use case: natural gas is billed in therms (US) while electricity is billed in kWh, so comparing heating costs means converting one to the other. A home using 50 therms of gas a month has used about 1,465 kWh of energy — directly comparable to an electricity bill. For the BTU step in between, see BTU to kWh.
Worked example: 10 therms is 10 × 29.3071 = 293.07 kWh. And 100 kWh of electricity is 100 ÷ 29.3071 = 3.41 therms of gas energy.
Handy benchmarks: 1 therm = 29.31 kWh, 5 therms = 146.54 kWh, 10 therms = 293.07 kWh and 50 therms = 1,465.36 kWh.
