atm to psi Converter
Convert atmospheres to pounds per square inch and back — the diving and science pressure unit, translated into the psi every American gauge reads.
Convert atm ⇄ psi
Formula: 2 atm (atm × 14.6959) = 29.3918 psi
How the atm to psi conversion works
One standard atmosphere is 14.6959 psi: psi = atm × 14.6959, and atm = psi ÷ 14.6959. An atmosphere is defined as 101,325 pascals exactly — the standard sea-level pressure — and 14.6959 is simply that figure divided by 6,894.76 pascals per psi.
Underwater, atmospheres stack up: this is where divers live in atm. At the surface you are at 1 atm; every 10 metres (about 33 feet) of seawater adds roughly another atmosphere. So at 20 metres a diver is at 3 atm absolute — and 3 × 14.6959 = 44.09 psi absolute. Dive tables and computer algorithms work in absolute pressure, which is why the atm framing is so natural underwater.
Absolute versus gauge — the trap: a scuba tank gauge reads gauge pressure (above atmosphere), while depth pressure in atm is absolute (including atmosphere). A tank showing 3,000 psi gauge holds about 3,014.7 psi absolute, or 205.1 atm. Never mix the two without adding or subtracting that one atmosphere — it is the single most common pressure-conversion mistake in diving and in lab work alike.
Handy benchmarks: 1 atm = 14.70 psi, 2 atm = 29.39 psi, 3 atm = 44.09 psi (about 20 m depth), 5 atm = 73.48 psi and 10 atm = 146.96 psi. For tyre and gauge pressures in psi alone, see our psi to kPa converter; for barometric readings, our inHg to hPa converter.
