Belt Size Converter

This belt size converter answers a small question with a surprisingly fiddly answer: your belt size is not your waist size. Enter your trouser waist below and it applies the usual rule — order a belt two inches larger than your waist — in both inches and centimetres.

Convert a waist measurement to a belt size

Belt size 36 in · 91.44 cm
For a 34-inch (86.36 cm) waist, by the waist-plus-two rule

A new belt should fasten on its middle hole. Some brands label by waist size or total length instead — match the waist column in that case.

The plus-two rule

A belt has to go around your waist plus the thickness of your trousers, plus enough tail to reach a comfortable hole — so belt sizes are sold about two inches above the waist they are meant for. If your trousers are a 34-inch waist, your belt size is typically 36 inches. The rule is not universal: some makers, especially in Europe, label belts by total length or by the waist they fit rather than by the belt's own size, and a few use S/M/L/XL bands instead. That is why the converter below also shows the centimetre figure and the waist it fits, so you can cross-check against any labelling system.

Typical waist-to-belt table

Figures below are typical values: belt size in inches is waist plus two, and centimetres are inches multiplied by 2.54. Where a brand labels by waist size instead, match the waist column, not the belt column.

How to measure, two ways

The best way is to wear the trousers the belt is for and run a tape through the belt loops, snug at the waist you actually wear them — high-waisted and low-rise trousers sit in different places, and a belt bought for one will not sit right on the other. The second way is to measure a belt that already fits: lay it flat and measure from the buckle end to the hole you normally use, not to the tip of the belt. That hole-to-buckle length is the belt's effective size, and it is the number to match when a maker quotes total length.

Width, buckles and the hole that matters

A well-fitting belt fastens on the middle hole, leaving two holes either side for weight change and different trousers — if you are on the last hole on day one, the belt is too small. Width matters too: dress belts are usually 25–32 mm and need to pass through suit-trouser loops, while casual and jeans belts run 35–40 mm and will not fit those loops. And a thick, heavy buckle eats length, so for a big buckle, lean to the larger size if you are between.

belt size converter questions

What belt size do I need for a 34 inch waist?
Typically a 36-inch belt (about 91 cm), by the usual waist-plus-two rule. Enter 34 above to see the centimetre figure too.
Is belt size the same as waist size?
Usually not — most belts are sold two inches above the waist they fit, to allow for trouser thickness and a comfortable hole. Some European makers label by waist size instead, so check which system the brand uses.
How do I measure for a belt?
Wear the trousers it is for and measure through the belt loops at the waist you wear them, or measure a belt that fits from the buckle to the hole you use. Do not measure to the tip of the belt.
Which hole should a new belt fasten on?
The middle hole, ideally — that leaves room either way for weight changes and different trousers. Fastening on the last hole on day one means the belt is too small.
What belt width do I need?
Match the loops: 25–32 mm for dress trousers, 35–40 mm for jeans and casual trousers. A belt wider than its loops simply will not thread.
