Yeast Grams to Teaspoons Converter

Convert yeast grams to teaspoons and back — with a preset for each yeast type, because a level teaspoon of active dry yeast weighs about 3.1 g while the same spoon of instant yeast weighs about 3.0 g. The whole calculation happens on this page, in your browser — nothing leaves your device.

Convert yeast grams ⇄ teaspoons

Pick your yeast type — active dry granules pack a touch heavier per spoon than the finer instant granules.
Yeast type
2.2581 tsp
7 g = 2.2581 tsp (at 3.1 g per US teaspoon)

Formula: 7 g ÷ 3.1 g/tsp = 2.2581 tsp

Approximate weights: yeast per-teaspoon weights vary a little by brand and how the spoon is filled — the presets are typical level-teaspoon values. A standard packet is 7 g either way, so when a dough matters, weigh the yeast rather than spooning it.

How the yeast conversion works

The converter applies teaspoons = grams ÷ grams-per-teaspoon, and the divisor changes with the yeast in your jar. Active dry yeast is dried into comparatively coarse granules and lands at roughly 3.1 g per level teaspoon; instant yeast is milled finer, absorbs liquid faster, and settles a fraction lighter at roughly 3.0 g per teaspoon. A tenth of a gram sounds like nothing, but spoon measures compound it — across a tablespoon the gap is 0.3 g, and in a small enriched dough that is enough to nudge the rise.

Worked example: the standard 7 g packet of active dry yeast is 7 ÷ 3.1 = 2.3 teaspoons — the familiar 2¼-teaspoon measure, which is how the packet size was defined in the first place. Going the other way, a recipe written as 3 teaspoons of instant yeast needs 3 × 3.0 = 9 g from the scale.

Quick reference

  • ½ tsp yeast — 1.6 g active dry · 1.5 g instant
  • 1 tsp yeast — 3.1 g active dry · 3 g instant
  • 2¼ tsp yeast (1 packet) — 7 g, either type
  • 1 tbsp yeast — 9.3 g active dry · 9 g instant

Fresh (compressed) yeast is deliberately not a preset here: it is moist, sold in blocks by weight, and crumbles rather than spoons — weigh it, and use our yeast conversion chart when a recipe swaps fresh for dry. yeast questions

How many grams is a teaspoon of yeast?
It depends on the type: a level US teaspoon of active dry yeast weighs about 3.1 g, while a teaspoon of finer instant yeast weighs about 3.0 g. Pick your type in the converter above so the maths uses the right weight.
How many teaspoons is 7 g of yeast?
About 2¼ teaspoons — 7 g is exactly one standard yeast packet. The long way round: 7 ÷ 3.1 = 2.3 teaspoons of active dry, and 7 ÷ 3.0 = 2.3 teaspoons of instant, so the packet measure holds for both types.
How many grams is a tablespoon of yeast?
A tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, so about 9.3 g of active dry yeast (3 × 3.1 g) or 9 g of instant yeast (3 × 3.0 g). Few home recipes go past a tablespoon; if yours does, check whether it was written for a different yeast type.
Can I swap instant yeast for active dry yeast one-for-one?
By weight, yes for most doughs — the same grams of either type leavens the same loaf. The handling differs: instant yeast stirs straight into the flour, while active dry is traditionally dissolved in warm water first, and instant tends to rise a little faster.
Can I convert teaspoons of yeast back to grams?
Yes — flip the direction switch above and the same maths runs in reverse: teaspoons × grams-per-teaspoon = grams. So 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast comes to 2 × 3.1 = 6.2 g on the scale, and 2 teaspoons of instant to 2 × 3.0 = 6 g.
